If there is one thing that most new parents struggle with, it is getting their babies ready for bed in a way in which they will be comfortable for the rest of the night. After all, the room temperature can drop considerably once the sun goes down, so even some warm evenings might turn into quite chilly nights. Ensuring that the little one is comfortable throughout the night will help them sleep a lot better, and it can also keep them safe while asleep.
So, make sure your baby is comfortable at night whatever the weather with these great tips.
Keep The Bedroom At A Safe Temperature
It is always important to regulate the temperature of your baby’s bedroom so that it stays at a safe temperature throughout the night. This is especially important when you go through periods of extreme heat or cold in the height of summer and winter. For babies, a room temperature of 16-20ºC (60.8-68ºF) is recommended, so make sure you set the thermostat or air con as soon as you put them to bed.
Ventilate The Room Accordingly
Ventilating the room will bring in plenty of fresh air and can prevent your baby from getting too stuffy. It’s a good idea to ventilate a baby’s room even in the winter. However, you have to do so in a way that prevents their room from getting too cold. The best way to do this is to close all the windows in their room but open the highest window in the house. Warm air rises and will be removed out of the window, but the breeze shouldn’t be strong enough to cool down your baby’s bedroom.
Put Them In Appropriate Clothing
Dressing your baby for the weather will also help them stay comfortable in bed. You’ll be able to find different kinds of pyjamas, suitable for both winter and summer, at your local toddler boutique or on online stores. The best rule of thumb is to dress your baby in the type of pyjamas that you will be wearing. That way, you don’t run the risk of over or under dressing them.
Use The Right Bedding
As well as the right clothing, the right bedding will also make a big difference as well. Generally speaking, it’s best to stay away from waterproof mattresses as they can retain a lot of heat in the summer and could warm up your baby. Cotton sheets are great in cribs as they are warm in the summer and cool in the winter.
Be Prepared To Make Changes
It is really common for parents to need to make changes to their baby’s sleep situation in the middle of the night. If your baby is finding it hard to fall asleep, they could to too hot or too cold. So, assess their situation and remove or add layers of clothing accordingly. Feel free to make any changes as long as it will make them more comfortable.
Once they are comfy, they’re more likely to sleep through the night!
